    Hello all!

I'm glad I found this site. I've been talking about quitting smoking for a long time and I've finally decided enough is enough. I'm quitting cold turkey and (hoping) to never look back!

I've been smoking more and more over the last few months while dealing with a painful separation. I was almost smoke-free for almost a year (I think?) but would bum the occasional smoke here and there. I then started Colts M cigars and only bought one at a time. Because I had to go to the store to get each one, that worked for a while, but then my addiction took over. I was constantly making excuses to go out and get a smoke. After a while, it seemed like I was going out all the time. Sometimes I would smoke more than one on a trip out. It got really bad.

I have several motivations to quit. My father (who quit smoking 20 years ago) has had several cancers and this last round has been particularly hard to see. I decided that I would quit and initially set Valentine's Day as my quit date. I kept doing the "just one more and then I'll quit" routine over the last 11 days and it never happened. I would often wonder why I couldn't stop.

Anyway, I'm putting my foot down and declaring February 26, 2020 as the start of my journey to a happier and healthier me! No more lighting my money on fire! No more of this unhealthy, stinky habit!

I managed not to smoke until 1 pm today. I've been dealing with a very stressful separation and an ex that is being very emotionally challenging. I had a couple of more smoker after that first one.

I'm not going to beat myself up about it, but I do want to keep myself accountable.

    sm0k3n0m0r3,

Stress is a very common reason for smoking again. Pick right up where you left off and try not to let these slips turn into a relapse. Try to think: how else can I manage stress in a healthy way other than smoking?

It is great that you are not being hard on yourself and are staying accountable by posting here.

    Best of luck!

We've all tried to quit, multiple times in may case, and had the odd slip or relapse. That is no big deal. It is learning from that which will help you keep, or re-start, your quit.

I used to do the same - stress smoking. One after the other at times. One thing I realized after I quit is that it was really an escape. I wasn't calming myself, I was running away from the stress. And wasting time. Nothing was being resolved.

I ended up chewing an awful lot of Nibs those first few months. They helped me with the hand to mouth habit.

    Hi sm0k3n0m0r3,

Good for you for deciding to quit.  It is the best decision you could ever make.

Stress is a very common trigger.  You have to try to figure out other ways to handle it, because you will always have stress in your life.  I quit cold turkey 3 years ago.  When I was stressed, I would stop and try to breathe deeply and relax.  I reiterated to myself that smoking would not help, and in fact, would only make matters worse as I was committed to my quit.  At first it was really hard, but it got easier over time.

Use your slip as a learning tool.  Think about things you could have done other than lighting up a cigarette.  I think all of us used smoking as our "go to" for just about everything.  So we have to relearn how to do things without smoking, and that takes time.  Glad to hear you're not beating yourself up.  Just keep trying your best.  You will get there.
