Hi;  I've smoked 40 years and despite having tried repeatedly to quit, the only time I lasted more than a few hours was about 20 years ago. I absolutely have to quit for the sake of my health. My old coping (running) is no longer available to me (car accident left me disabled). I am strong and resilient in other areas of life but this addiction has such a stranglehold on me. I've set a quit date for next week.  If I fail again I feel I'll just give up.  I've done all the steps in planning but still feel like a worm on a pin, afraid of failing, and I feel like I don't know what I'm doing, why so many people are successful and I fail over and over.  Suggestions to get through the first few days are welcome, as is any other advice. I very much want to be rid of cigarettes.

    Hi lauriellr,
I can totally relate to where you're coming from, and I smoked for 45 years. I'm on my 11th day of not smoking, and never thought I'd get this far. The fact that you're setting a quit day is a positive step, and I did that too. I tried to stop many times, and never succeeded before, but don't give up. I'm using every nicotine replacement product I can get to help me, and I find the gum really takes the edge off the cravings for me. I also use the patch, and the inhaler. Whatever works! Like you, I always wondered how so many people could quit, and I never could. I never joined a forum like this before, and I find that it helps. Everyone is so supportive, which really helps alot. Please keep reading the stories, and posting, and I'll be rooting for you on your journey!

    Hi Lauriellr
congrats on deciding to quit. I was also a smoker for 40 years and had attempted to quit many times.  Last February I was getting a bad cough and decided to quit for good. I just passed 200 days. It hasn’t been easy. But it is getting easier. Take everything one day at a time. Good luck and keep posting it really helps

Thank you for your response. I don't have support people (in fact my mother feeds me every rationalization she can to get me to keep smoking), so knowing someone else out there gets it is helpful.

Wow.  200 days. You know, I can't imagine it but I would love to be able to quit for that long. Think of all the damage that has been avoided in those 200 days.  I'm glad to hear it's getting easier.  The times that I've tried have been sooo hard and it felt like things were going to get worse or never get better, so it helps to think that things will improve.

Hi lauriellrs. Just reading the posts because I am new at the fact of being able to speak about this with others Quitters. Call me what you want. This is the only time I want to be a quitter. Just wondering how you’re doing with your success story. You are doing this for yourself nobody else.
