    Hi smartdog,

Welcome to our group, and congrats on deciding to quit smoking.

I smoked for about 43 years and finally had enough.  I decided I needed to change my life.  I quit cold turkey.  It was really tough, but I learned some tricks of the trade.  I drank lots of water to get rid of the toxins in my body.  I found distracting myself to be really helpful.  I read books, played games, and went for walks.  I also had lots of naps, because you don't crave when you sleep.  When a craving hit, I would wait in 10 minute increments, because anyone can wait for 10 minutes.  I read about all the benefits of quitting, and made a list of all the reasons why I wanted to quit.

That was over 5 years ago, and I have been a non-smoker ever since.  So you see, it is possible to quit, no matter how long you have been a smoker.

Good luck to you smartdog, and keep posting.  We are all here to help ourselves and each other.

Hi Smartdog:  I too am a 50 year smoker that decided to quit last November. It has been 8 months now of smoke free journey, so I understand what you are going through. I would go on this site everyday and read how other people quit and read how they distracted themselves.  Take it one day at a time, one hour ,or ten minutes  Be proud and happy with yourself that you made it this far. We know it;s tough, but you can do this. Use NOPE it works  and keep in touch . we are cheering for you.

Welcome Smartdog.  I was also a smoker for 40 years. I am coming up on 5 months smoke free.  I found drinking water from a straw helped. And take it one day at a time. Congrats on 2 days.  Keep posting and coming on this site it really helps
