Hi smartdog,
Welcome to our group, and congrats on deciding to quit smoking.
I smoked for about 43 years and finally had enough. I decided I needed to change my life. I quit cold turkey. It was really tough, but I learned some tricks of the trade. I drank lots of water to get rid of the toxins in my body. I found distracting myself to be really helpful. I read books, played games, and went for walks. I also had lots of naps, because you don't crave when you sleep. When a craving hit, I would wait in 10 minute increments, because anyone can wait for 10 minutes. I read about all the benefits of quitting, and made a list of all the reasons why I wanted to quit.
That was over 5 years ago, and I have been a non-smoker ever since. So you see, it is possible to quit, no matter how long you have been a smoker.
Good luck to you smartdog, and keep posting. We are all here to help ourselves and each other.
