I too had been thinking of quitting for a long time, then I did it this past Monday. I had a health scare, sounds like you have one too. From past attempts, I knew that moodiness, anger, sadness, cravings, tiredness, etc. were on the horizon.
Here's what has helped me so far. I use the patch. On the first day, packed a lunch of clementines, apples, leftover pizza (thankfully in the fridge), V8 tins & a giant bag of Hersey kisses (Xmas shopping victim). I did a similar lunch each day, minus the Hersey kisses, but the point is, alot of foods that keep my hands busy.
I told my family and friends. People have cheered me on. They check in by text.
I downloaded a quit smoking app called SmokeQuitter. I look at it A LOT. I Google and read about quitting, especially when I want to smoke. I think of how awful it would be to do the first few days again when I'm tempted.
It is a struggle. The side effects happen. It is not easy. I'm looking forward to not being consumed by the thought of smoking. You can do it too. Good luck to me and you :)
