Good morning everyone i am so happy to finally be back and i still am and always will be smoke free and i want to thank everyone here for helping me to quit smoking and stay quit.  this may not be exactly the proper place for this but i am starting a new and very important time in my life and i hope to be able to gain support through my friends to stick to my plan.  i have joined a weight loss program that is very strict and i have a great start - between july 1st and 9th i have lost 10 pounds !!!!  i am looking at this weight loss program exactly as i did here on sho - one minute, hour and day at a time and with god's guidance and help from my friends i plan on making this loss as permanent as my quitting smoking.  i have over 100 pounds to lose and i will achieve my goal in time.  it took years to put the weight on from not only eating the wrong food but because i am on so much medication for all of my many illnesses but i am setting all of my excuses aside and striving to reach my goal one day at a time.  i hope this post is allowed to stay on here because i may not be the only person striving to achieve this goal either from putting on weight from quitting smoking or any other personal reasons.  i hope and pray that you all have a great day and week ahead.

thanks to linda and brieffree for your support in this new journey i am taking.  so many people say that they gave up their quits because of the weight gain and i won't lie to you - most will see some weight gain but it is nothing to be ashamed of and in fact after you are more settled and at ease with your quits you could try by starting small with a little adjustment of your foods and maybe add a little exercise and see where i takes you.  i know i am not the only disabled wheelchair bound person in this group and at first i thought i can't exercise so hot can i ever lose weight and in fact it was an old sho member my dear friend sparky (i miss you still sparky) that showed me that there was a way for me to exercise in this chair.  he told me to take 2 soup cans and put one in each and and lower your arms down and bring them up to fold your arms high and when you got good at that change the cans to tomato cans or larger cans and guess what - it worked for me and it can for you too.  there are so many ways to get your body moving whether you are healthy or sick.  give it a try sometime and you might be surprised what happens.  no matter what or when never never give up or put your quit at risk - you are so worth every ounce of life you have in you and here is to living a longer and more healthy life smoke free and with a more healthy weight and toned up body.  good luck to everyone and if you have questions then here's the place to ask and i will try to answer and if i am not qualified to answer then i can surely point you in the right direction.  have a great rest of today and may the sun always shine on each and every one of you my dear friends.

well hello to everyone on this beautiful sunday morning/afternoon - one week gone and i am about to embark on a whole new week with endless possibilities.  for those of you that are new in your quits congratulations for making the most important choice in your life.  for others that have been around a while like me make each day that you are smoke free a joyous occasion.  last week i began a new journey in my life - i joined a weight loss program and am doing well.  quitting smoking more often than not brings on a most undesirable side effect of gaining some unwanted weight and as scary as this sounds it is one of the most common reasons for giving up your quit.  i have found that once you feel more  confident and safe in your quit then would be the time to address your weight gain issues.  as undaunting as this sounds it is no where as hard as quitting smoking but it is hard to get into it.  don't be afraid that taking 2 journeys at the same time will be overwhelming and starting thinking that you just can't do it because actually it is almost natural for the 2 journeys to go together.  during the planning stage and the first days of our quits we learn about how to break the habit of hand to mouth with the cigarettes so instead of the nasty white sticks why not try inserting some healthy foods like veggies or try eating low carb, higher fat and protein and you just might find yourself beginning to enjoy this new adventure.  i know i have more energy now that i am eating much more responsibly and although i am in my wheelchair i am finding more ways to make every day as fun filled as possible and challenging too with creating my menu for tomorrow the day before and if you don't think that's a toughy i suggest you try it - it is fun and time consuming - something that you would have done before as the old you would have been smoking but this new way is enjoyable and darn fun.  try it sometime and you will see what i mean.  well have a wonderful sunday and may the sun always shine on each and every one of you my dear friends.

    Hi mdjsunshine,

Thank you for sharing your personal goals with us and for updating us on your progress!

Weight gain, although not guaranteed, can be a barrier for many who are trying to quit so your honesty and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Baby steps, tackling 1 thing at a time as to not overwhelm yourself with goals is very smart and has clearly been working for you: 10 lbs!!

We continue to look forward to hearing from you and your positivity shines to our other members.

thanks jenna lee for the positive affirmation.  who would have thought way back almost 6 years ago that a frightened of her own shadow woman would end up on sho after she quit smoking !!!  it sure has been a ride and i can't say i didn't enjoy myself all these years after wearing a few different hats but here i am once again with all the support i need right here in the wonderful place i found that helped me to become a butterfly and a smoke free one at that.  it was baby steps with my quit and it is once again baby steps but with all of you helping to move forward how can i go wrong.  same goes for the other members here - you need some help never be shy to post for help - sometimes it is the big difference between wanting to be smoke free and actually being smoke for life,

hi everyone i have wonderful news to share with you.  i lost 2 more pounds !!!!  i know i have a long way to go but i also did the day i first quit smoking and here i am now almost 6 years smoke free.  time and time again i hear people saying they tried to quit smoking but the minute they see one extra pound when they weigh themselves it is automatically due to not smoking so they plug a cigarette in their mouth and utter a "wow that was a close call - i almost gained weight"  when someone comes to this site looking for help and direction to try and quit smoking they are directed to the area of this wonderful place.  there are numerous articles and suggestions on how to plan ahead for your quit and there are also quite a number of suggestions on ways to keep your quit.  i know there are some low fat choices of different foods to help replace the hand to mouth habit that happens when we put the cigarettes to our mouths and pull it away to blow the smoke out or inhale it in.  after all is said and done it is exactly the same things i am doing with my weight loss journey.  for some the thought of doing two things that are both extremely hard to do at the same time is too hard to handle so they choose one or the other to work on and i am so glad they came here first to get their quit started and they feel comfortable with where they are in their quit.  now would be the best time t tackle those pesky pounds that appeared out of nowhere and get them handled and so another journey begins.  please think carefully when you do read this post because both of these things are detrimental to us and they can both be avoided and a happier and healthy person emerges from their bodies.  in ending this post may the sun always shine on each and every one of you and please never be afraid or shy to ask questions.

hello again to everyone and i for one and so happy that i have all of you to keep me on the straight path.  the lord shines and path for me to take and all of you whether you know it or not help me to stay and never stray.  we have had unbearable weather here for the past few days and in all of my 62 years of life i have never seen our thermometer go to 45 degrees !!!!!  that is like 114 degrees fahrenheit.  as colonel potter from mash would say "gees louise it is hot out here"  and he was surely right.  makes it very hard sticking to a diet let alone eat anything at all so i am hoping for better results next week.  i did lose one measly pound but it is better than gaining a pound.  thanks so much for allowing me to share my new adventure with all of you and i hope and pray you are all having a great day.

Hi Sunshine, this to me is a very important topic and it is eventually affect every single person that makes the choice to put the cigarettes down for good, next to quitting weight gain is the second hardest thing to control, every single time I quit this has been my issue and ultimately the reason I started back to smoking. When I made the decision to quit this time I also made the decision that nothing was going to stop me, not even the weight gain, weight is a pretty sensitive issue for me mostly because of my knees and the fact that I am diabetic, but I made a decision that nothing was going to stop me, I can’t let it stop me even if it means going back on insulin, I was already quite a bit heavier then I wanted to be when I quit, but the social implications for continuing to smoke were one of my biggest factors in starting my quit this time, I can’t let it stand in my way, I am currently 290 Lbs but at this point I don’t care, I am quitting for me

Hi mdjsunshine, congratulations on your weight loss so far and for sharing your progress with us.

I know I need to lose weight which I started thinking about before my quit day. Depression helped me put on an extra 20 pounds that I didn't need as I was already overweight. I am going back to the program I was using a couple of years ago.

Keep up the good work and please keep us posted.

You know what sunshine, i have gotten to the point now where i don't really care what others think of me, how big i am, or if i am doing what they want, there was a time when i was so self conscience about what other people thought of me, but then there came a time when i just stopped caring, so im a few pounds overweight, there will be a time to address my weight, but now is not the time, right now i am just trying to keep my head above water, and trying to stay smokefree, in the beginning that was consuming all of my time, and to be honest with you, i don't know when the right time will be, i just don't want to end up like our dear friend sparky (God rest his soul) where it wasn't the cigarettes that killed him. but diabetes, i am hoping and praying that God will grant me the wisdom to address my weight before it is to late, right now i am just trying to keep my head above water, then i will address the weight

OH MY DEAR SWEET FRIEND SMITTY I HEAR YOU LOUD AND CLEAR AND PLEASE KNOW THAT YOU ARE DOING THE RIGHT THING AND I AM ALWAYS HERE FOR YOU AND ALWAYS WILL BE NO MATTER WHAT.  WHO THE HELL HAS THE RIGHT TO JUDGE ANY OF US FOR HOW WE LOOK, ACT OR DRESS.  THE QUITTING SMOKING THINGY RIGHT NOW IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN YOUR LIFE AND RIGHTLY SO IT SHOULD BE BECAUSE BEING FREE FROM THE NICOTINE IS ALLOWING US TO LIVE A LONGER AND HOPEFULLY A HEALTHIER LIFE.  I TOO MISS OUR BUDDY SPARKY AND ALWAYS WILL AND DON'T LAUGH BUT SOMETIMES I CAN FEEL HIM GIVE ME A KICK IN THE BEHIND AND SAY "GET IT RIGHT SUNSHINE"  I HAVE STRUGGLED SO HARD WITH MY DIABETES AND IT IS ONLY NOW SOME ALMOST 6 YEARS INTO MY QUIT SMOKING JOURNEY THAT I FEEL CAPABLE OF TAKING ON THIS NEW JOURNEY OF TACKLING MY WEIGHT SITUATION AND BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY THAT I AM SURE THAT BEING ABLE TO COME HERE AND POST ABOUT MY FEELINGS, WINS AND LOSSES IS WHAT IS KEEPING ME IN LINE.  I ASKED GOD TO SHINE A LIGHT FOR ME SO I WOULD KNOW THE RIGHT PATH TO CHOSE AND I CAN SEE THE PATH LAID OUT IN FRONT OF ME SO WELL THAT I KNOW THIS CHOICE AND THIS TIME I WILL MAKE IT THANKS TO GOD, MY ANGELS AND MY FRIENDS HERE THAT HELD MY HAND THROUGH MY QUITTING SMOKING AND NOW I AM HERE ONCE AGAIN HOLDING HANDS WITH MY FRIENDS AS I FOLLOW THIS PATH TO A HEALTHIER ME.  SMITTY PLEASE DON'T LET WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT YOU STOP YOU FROM ACHIEVING YOUR GOAL AND RIGHT NOW THAT GOAL IS QUITTING SMOKING AND GETTING YOUR DIABETES UNDER CONTROL.  THE TIME FOR WEIGHT LOSS WILL BE HERE FOR YOU WHEN YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH YOUR QUIT.  JUST REMEMBER THE SONG "ONE DAY AT A TIME SWEET JESUS" AND THIS IS HOW WE BOTH HAVE TO LOOK AT OUR JOURNEYS.  EVERYONE THAT IS HERE ON SHO IS DOING THE SAME THING AS WE ARE - TRYING TO QUIT SMOKING OR TRYING TO STAY QUIT SO ONCE AGAIN WE ARE ALL GATHERED TOGETHER IN ONE BIG FAMILY AND SHARING OUR GOOD TIMES AND BAD TIMES WITH EACH OTHERS AND DRAWING SUPPORT FROM ONE ANOTHER.  I STILL PUT ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER AND NEVER FORGET THAT IT WAS ALL OF YOU TOGETHER THAT GOT ME TO WHERE I AM TODAY AND SMITTY IT WILL BE THE SAME FOR YOU - WE WILL HELP EACH OTHER GET TO WHERE WE WANT AND NEED TO BE SO WITH THAT BEING SAID MAY THE SUN ALWAYS SHINE ON EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU MY DEAR FRIENDS

Jenna is right we are all here rooting for you, you talk about your illness, you know I think adds allot of extra stress because like you I am fighting, sometimes for my life, it's been a real hard couple of weeks for me battling with my diabetes, my vision started going blurry a couple of weeks ago and it scarred the heck out of me, doctor says that is is in fact my diabetes, the other day I could hardly see the computer screen to type my daily pledges out, it seems that my right eye is worse then my left, you know, we always fret over the small thing, "my vision is blurry", or "Im not losing wieght" or I had a bad craving today and I just barely made it through the day, the thing that we forget to remind ourselves is that we are all in this together, when you have a bad day, I can't stop but think, "how are you doing now, we share a common bond, and thats not going away any time soon, when brieffree said today that he was having bad cravings today, I could'nt help but wonder, hows he doing now, I will continue to fight on, that's a fact of my existence, and I think that it's great when we can stand up and fight this God forsaken addiction as a group, I think that it's so much easier when we fight as one, Good night all
