Just wondering if anyone else has experienced picking up another addiction in replace of smoking. I usually have a few drinks a week but now it's like I'm drinking every day not all day just at night. Is this common or am I just weird.

    Hi banana9669

Really good point! you must be so careful not to replace!

If you see that you have a problem drinking, do something, before is too late!

    All the best!

Hey banana - you're not weird - well, you're question isn't weird at least, lol!

When we quit smoking, we deprive ourselves of our chemical addiction.  It is only natural to seek some other means to self-medicate and get that 'buzz' we had become so accustomed to.

Many people also lose their smoking quit due to alcohol as they throw inhibition into the wind and wrongfully believe they can have just one.

I seriously cut back/eliminated any alcohol for the first few months of my quit.

Please don't replace one unhealthy addiction with another.

    Hi banana9669,
As others have mentioned, this isn't a odd question at all. It is really good that you have noticed the pattern and acknowledged it. When people quit smoking, we talk a lot about replacing one habit with something else. Some reflect on things they used to do, or new things they have wanted to try. A few ideas that we have heard of have been:
    • Painting
    • Running/walking
    • Joining a fitness club/yoga
    • Working on puzzles
    • Crocheting/knitting
    • Reorganizing rooms in their home
I would suggest checking out the "distractions" thread on the Community Forums. Quitting smoking gives so many gifts; the gift of time, better health and an open door to try new/old hobbies that may have slipped away.

Keep up the amazing work with your quit.

    Sincerely,

    nadia b.

Thank you all for replying. I am trying not to have any alcohol right now. I'm 7 days in not smoking and 2 days no drinks. I honestly didn't think this form would work or even get any response so thank you

    Hi banana 9669,

WooHoo, 7 days smoke free!  Good for you, that is fantastic!

Glad to hear you haven't been drinking either.  Although it's tempting and easy to do, it isn't helpful to replace one bad habit with another.  A lot of us have found that quitting smoking actually led us into a healthier lifestyle all around.  I know that when I smoked, I didn't bother with exercise, partly because my lungs couldn't handle it, but also partly because I figured, what's the point when I smoke anyways?  Now that I am a non-smoker, while I still do not formally "exercise", I focus on what I can do, which in my case is more walking.  I am also more mindful of what I eat, and I try to do things that make me happy as well, because mental health is just as important as physical health.

Look at quitting smoking as an opportunity to change your life for the better.  Think of ways you can improve your lifestyle and/or your habits.  Quitting can be really empowering.  It is so difficult to do that when you achieve your goal, you feel that you can do anything.  And you can.  So this is actually a really exciting time in your life.  The sky's the limit.  Reach out and grab it.  It's a beautiful thing!

    Hi banana,

We at Smokers' Helpline hope you are doing well lately and considering if not already making healthy lifestyle changes.

As treepeo mentioned that either formal or informal exercise can be an excellent replacement for smoking or other chemical needs. So you don't have to got out and join a gym but walking, hiking, cycling can help you feel better while you are getting fresh air and Vit D this time of year.

If you need further assistance banana 9669 please call us @ 1-877-513-5333.

    Cheers,

    Jenna C.
