Hi everybody. My name is Chris. I've been smoking for almost 30 years around 1 - 1.5 packs a day. Thinking of quitting and hopefully maybe make it.

    Hi Chris,

It sounds like maybe this is your time to quit.  You just have to figure out how to go about it.

I smoked for over 43 years, and I literally had no idea what to do.  So I read through the materials on this site and I learned a great deal.  Ultimately, I decided to quit cold turkey.  I had tried to quit numerous times before, but this time I told myself that in order to succeed, I really had to get serious and not give in no matter what.  Easier said than done.  That first day, I made it to 7:00 p.m. and then lit up.  But I was determined, and two days later I gave it another go and the rest is history.  I have been a non-smoker for four years.

You have to decide whether you will go cold turkey, or whether you will use NRTs.  You also need to be flexible.  You might have to change up your normal routines.  So if you wake up having a coffee and a cigarette, maybe have a tea instead, or a glass of milk.  Try to avoid triggers.  If there are people you meet to smoke with, try to keep your distance for a while.  Find things to do to distract yourself.  And drink lots of water to help your body remove toxins.  It's also a good idea to make a list of all of the reasons why you want to quit.  You should refer to it often.

I know the thought of quitting can be scary, Chris, but you can do it if you set your mind to it.  You are stronger than your addiction.  Believe in yourself.
