    Good Morning,

I was watching a period documentary about Bobby Kennedy last night. As I watched newsman Edgar R. Murrow flourishing a cigarette between his fingers in an on-screen interview and Bobby Kennedy's cigar filling his office with smoke, it occurred to me how far the world has changed in the last fifty years.

Back then smoking was accepted as a normal social activity. Fast forward to 2018 and it is in many ways considered anti-social. I was the lone person among my family and friends who still smoked and I found myself standing alone out in the snow and cold on Christmas day, cigarette in hand while the others enjoyed warmth and friendship indoors. When I finished my smoke and returned indoors there were looks of disapproval.

Fifty years ago smokers were naïve about the harmful effects of tobacco. In 2018, I was smoking with the full knowledge that I was gradually killing myself. In addition, I was voluntarily paying a heavy excise tax to the Government of Canada to do so!

The several decades of popularity for smoking ended years ago and were only a flash in the pan of human history. I chose two months ago to rejoin humanity and butted out for the last time.

Good for you!! I have been smoke free for 2 months and i also was a loner in a family of non-smokers. I knew smoking was bad for me from when i started and there are things people said to me and my parents said to me that should have deterred me from smoking but of course i didnt listen. I have hope for future generations of high school kids who arent smoking as the number of teens smoking has decreased. But there is now kids that think vaping is cool. But i guess we have all the scientific evidence to prove smoking and vaping is bad for health to hopefully keep people away from it all. :)
I found your post insightful and thought I'd put in my two cents. Have a great smokefree day!!

Eagerquit, great post!!  Cigarette companies have heavily marketed the cigarettes as a social thing in the past, just like how the coffee shops are promoting coffee as a Social thing we cannot live without.   Like we simply need to stop by a coffee shop and grab a coffee just to talk to some one. :)  There was also so much product placements by Cigarette companies in the past, like paying for movie stars, tv stars, models, etc to smoke on screen, similar to what the coffee shops are doing now paying most morning and evening shows (news operas) to have their coffee mugs visible. :)  Anyhow, because of all the health issues cigarettes caused, law makers have now caught up and brought in many laws to control such ads by cigarettes companies.    In summary, Cigarettes were never a symbol of normal social activity, rather it was marketed that way back then, just like how the coffee is being marketed to us now.   Smoking is really nasty and bad habit we should stay away from. :)
