Hello all, so this is probably my 7th or 8th time quitting. The difference this time is I’m not looking for an excuse to start again. There has been a couple of moments where I wanted to jump in my car and rush to the store for a cigarette. I’ve been stronger than I’ve ever been in the past and feel like this may be the time I quit forever. It’s been 18 days and I was having a very stressful moment today and REALLY wanted to smoke and that’s how I ended up here. If this is for support I really need it tonight. Fortunately it’s gett late and the stores are closing soon.

    hi tamfletch,

I can't stress enough how much your determination shines. You chose to reach out for support, rather than purchasing a new pack. Stress is such a common trigger and I am sure so many people here in our community can relate. Reaching out for support is definitely one way to manage stress. I hope you can find more ways to get through stressful times, rather than smoking.

    Any ideas anyone?

Thanks for sharing your struggles, and congratulations for 18 days!!!

    Keep up the amazing work,

    Jenna Lee

    Hi tamfletch,

First of all, I want to congratulate you on your 18 smoke free days.  That is terrific, and you should be so proud of yourself.  I know you must be going through hell, because the first part of a quit is really hard in so many ways.  But once you get through that horror, it starts to get easier.  And you start to notice that you are feeling better.

I thought about, and tried, quitting so many times over the years, but was unsuccessful.  But this time, something told me that this was my time to quit.  And I did.  It sounds like you have reached that point, too.  I think as smokers, we just reach a point where we say, no more, this has to stop.  And we do whatever we have to to make it happen.

If you haven't already, try reading some of the material on this site.  There are things you can do to make this journey a bit easier to deal with.  A big help for me was distraction.  I kept myself as busy as possible so I wouldn't think about smoking.  And try to do fun things.  The happier you are, the easier it is to cope with those nasty cravings.

I hope you keep in touch, tamfletch.  We are here for you.

Hi tamfletch and welcome to the forum.  You will find much support here, and that is exactly why many of us stay so close to it.

What an incredibly powerful statement you make - "The difference this time is I'm not looking for an excuse to start again."  I read that 3 or 4 times and just nodded my head in agreement.  I think many of us attempted to quit but not really believing it would work.  We failed before we even started.  Only when we believe we will succeed is quitting possible.  I'm so glad you're at that point.

Stay strong - we'll get through this together.
