Hi turningpoint,
I am one of the younger seniors (55+). I smoked for 43 years, and I quit cold turkey. Part of the reason why I quit was because I looked around at other people my age and older, and I thought, "I don't want to live the latter part of my life dealing with major health problems." And let's face it, that's what smoking caused for so many of our generation. And the rest died prematurely due to smoking. Like one of my friends said when I was still smoking with her, "We are a dying breed." And it's true. So I decided to change my life.
Now I know that I have done irreparable damage to my body. That's just a fact. However, quitting has given me a new lease on life. Was it hard to quit? You betcha. In fact, it was the hardest thing I have ever volunteered to do. But man, was it worth it. I now have a fighting chance of living a life free from complications such as heart attack and stroke. And that's a really good thing.
Just the thought of quitting can be daunting. But trust me, turningpoint, if I can do it, so can you. And you don't have to do it cold turkey, either. There are so many different NRTs you can use to help you through this process.
I hope you go for it, turningpoint. Quitting will make a huge change in your life. Give it a shot. You won't regret it.
