Why worry about smoking cessation?

Quitting smoking is the single-most effective way to improve patient or client health outcomes.  Commercial tobacco use is responsible for more than 45,000 deaths in Canada annually, and significant additional impacts on quality of life. Smoking rates among Canada’s Indigenous populations are, on average, twice as high as those of non-Indigenous Canadians.

Statistics Canada indicates that 3 in 5 smokers intend to quit in the next 6 months, yet only 3-5% are successful without assistance. The rate of smoking among First Nations, Inuit and Métis is two to five times higher than among non-Indigenous Canadians.

Talk Tobacco Referral Program

The Talk Tobacco Referral Program eliminates the need for patients or clients to call Talk Tobacco. Instead, a Talk Tobacco Quit Coach will contact the tobacco user to provide counselling. The healthcare provider simply needs to explain the program to their client, encourage them to register for the service by signing a consent form then the provider faxes in the signed form. Within 3 days the client will receive a phone call from a Quit Coach at Talk Tobacco. Evaluation of this program indicates that 60% of those contacted by Talk Tobacco would not have called, had they not been directly referred for proactive service.

How will Talk Tobacco follow up with my patients/clients?

Upon receipt of a faxed consent form, the referral is entered into the Talk Tobacco confidential database and a call is scheduled for a preferred time of day that the client has identified. Tobacco Cessation Specialists (Quit Coaches) provide information about the service, assess a client’s readiness to quit and offer services based on each individual client’s needs. Talk Tobacco takes measures to protect the privacy of clients, including physical security, code of conduct and security policy, data storage, integrity, transfer and access policies and a security audit.

How can I help my patients/clients?

To get started, use the information and resources on this site to learn more and to access the referral form. Any healthcare provider in Ontario can access Quit Connection in order to refer patients or clients to Talk Tobacco by fax.

Brief contact interventions can powerfully motivate clients to make a quit attempt.

As health professionals, you encounter people at "teachable moments" when they may be more inspired to make a change. Advice from a health professional can increase success with quitting by up to 30%, and a referral to a Quitline can further improve those odds.

Talk Tobacco can be used on its own or as a seamless adjunct to clinical intervention.
