Hello everyone.  I was here a few years back on a quitting journey but I fell off the wagon.  I'm back now because I am having health issues that require surgery and it won't happen until I have quit for at least 3 months.
I felt more confident when I was quitting because I wanted to and there is some extra anxiety with HAVING to.  But I've done it before and largely thanks to this site so I am going to give it another try.  I haven't picked a quit date yet but the sooner I do the sooner I can have the surgery.
A little bit about me is that I am 33, mother of two, and the wife to an awesome man.  My mother passed away at age 47 from lung cancer which was now 8 years ago.  I am looking forward to all the health benefits to a smoke free life including being able to get into shape and be more active with my children.
I look forward to being part of this group again.

EDITED: I've decided to set my quit date for Saturday, May 12th. I figure a weekend might be easier than a work day because giving up my smokes breaks on a first quit day may be difficult.

Hello kittiev - welcome back to our community - its good to hear from you again - and for making another attempt at quitting smoking. You have quit before, so you know you can do it again! We are here to support you, as there are benefits for your health, but also a lot of benefits to quitting prior to having a surgical procedure.
What are some of the strategies you would like to include in your quit?
Sounds like you have some good support from your partner, and of course, from us here on SHL.ca. Remember, if you need to talk, you can also call us at Smokers Helpline 1-877-513-5333. We are here 7 days/week.
    All the best,
    Sarah

    Hi kittiev,

I get what you mean about the difference between wanting to quit, and having to quit.  You're right.  It's easier to quit when you want to quit.  So maybe you can write a list of all of the benefits you will get from quitting.  That might help to motivate you.  And honestly, if you are going to have surgery, you want to go in as a non-smoker.  Your circulation will be so much better, and you will heal more quickly, with less chance of complications.  It makes a tremendous difference when you stop smoking.

I know it's going to be tough for you, but you can do it.  Believe in yourself.  You are worth it.

    Hi Kittiev,

Welcome back to the Smokers Helpline. I quit two months ago and found this forum very helpful for suggestions and others' success stories. I have found that quitting is a process rather than an event as they say. It is a journey to freedom from the chains of addiction. I don't doubt your quit will have a very positive influence on your children.
