tamhart, congratulations on setting your quit date and welcome to SHO. Be sure to prepare by giving some real thought to your reasons for quitting. It is proving to be a valuable tool to me in my quit this time. I remind myself of them often. It has gotten me through some tough cravings and has given me a sense of accomplishment.

    Best wishes,
    quitfriend

    Hi Tammy,

Welcome to the forum.  We are so glad you decided to join us.

It's great that you set a quit date.  What date did you choose?

Now it is time to prepare for your quit.  Like quitfriend suggested, it's a good idea to make a list of all of the reasons why you want to quit.  Put the list somewhere where you will look at it often.  Also start thinking about things you can do to distract yourself when the cravings hit.  I think we have all found that keeping busy really helps.  Are you planning on using any NRTs?  The patch, or Champix?

Feel free to post as often as you like.  We are here to support each other through the good times and the bad times.  Remember, if you are really struggling or have specific questions, you can always call the hotline for additional help.  The quit coaches here are absolutely top notch, and they would be happy to help you with anything you need.

I look forward to supporting you on your journey.

    Hi tamhart,

Congratulations on your decision to quit smoking. You are embarking on a journey to better health and quality of life. Set up the dashboard in this site to get daily reports on your progress with reports of days smoke free, life saved, cigarettes not smoked and money saved. You can also opt to receive encouraging emails and texts from the helpline by clicking on "email setup" and "text me" at the right of the dashboard. The first week challenge is also available there. There are also facts about quit aids. There are also great items in the "My quit plan" "I want to quit" "Why quit" and "How we help" links at the top.

I wish you every success in your quit.

    Good Afternoon tamhart,

Tomorrow is the day! Setting the date and posting about it, is a huge step tamhart. You are really getting yourself ready and set. Pretty fantastic!

It is good you are thinking about some of the triggers, those thoughts and ideas around it will help you be prepared and face them successfully.

As you know, when your husband smokes, it is likely going to cause you some cravings and thoughts about "oh, maybe I should just go and have one...."

This all makes for a tougher time for sure but it can be overcome. Others have quit with smoking partners, you can too.

How do you want to help yourself in that moment? Should you have a treat, go do something, perhaps do some deep breathing? What makes sense for you?

Is there anything that he can do(aside from quitting) that would help? A hug? Some encouragement?

Keep on thinking tamhart, you will come up with the right ideas!

Remember to keep the community posted, we are rooting for you!

    Hi tamhart,

I understand your concerns.  The fact that your husband smokes will make things more difficult for you, there is no doubt about it.  That is why your resolve to quit has to be really strong.

You know, I have some sisters who still smoke, and they smoke indoors as well.  Although we don't live together, I see them often, because one of them lives in an apartment down the hall from me.  When I first quit, I wondered how I would manage around them, and if I could even do it.  But then I realized that that was going to be only one of many, many challenges I would face when I tried to quit.  There is no way to completely avoid smokers.

Then I told myself that what I was doing was super important, and that I had to do it for me.  And I couldn't worry or be influenced by what anyone else did or didn't do.  It was all on me as to whether I was going to quit.  And I focused on the fact that I was strong enough to do it no matter what.

Interestingly, and also sadly, none of my smoking sisters helped me or encouraged me in any way when I started my quit.  I really think they wanted me to fail, so they could tell themselves, "See, it can't be done."  But that was not the case.  And even though they didn't support me, I got support elsewhere, including here.  And I stuck to my guns.

I guess what I am trying to say, tamhart, is that you have to decide for yourself if you really want to quit.  And then you have to work towards that goal, without letting anyone else stop you.

Good luck tomorrow, tamhart, and let us know how you are doing.  We are here for you.

My husband still smokes too so, if you want, we can complain about them together. Lol.
