As I climb out of the pool and dry off with a double espresso on a breezy Sunday afternoon, I can not be more proud of myself for quitting smoking 873 days ago. My prideful thoughts being inspired by the passing of my uncle early this morning. My uncle was a heavy smoker, and by heavy, I mean don't you dare crack the window of his station wagon as you're in the back-back flip out seats for fear of letting some of that smoke out. He was a heavy smoker for nearly 60 years. And then he quit, overnight, cold turkey, just like that. Never touched another cigarette as long as he lived. The damage had been done as he spent his last 10+ years with an oxygen tank in tow and ever hiding from the hot and humid days. He never had a regret, for you see, his inspiration to quit, to suddenly give up a decades long addiction, was the birth of a grandchild. As he held the new life in his arms, he found his motivation to dig deep and fulfill what every smoker desires - freedom.
I quit 2.5 years ago, on a cold Sunday afternoon of a Family Day long weekend. Family was my motivation to quit as well. To all those struggling, find your motivation to guide you on the journey. To all those celebrating, let me join you, as we continue to rejoice and live our lives as we want.
