Hello,  my sister has stage 4 liver cancer. In order 2 extend her life the surgeon said he will operate in July.  This is only on one condition and that is she must stop smoking. I promised her I too would stop and support her. We are on our 11th day.  We are both in our 50s and have smoked since we were 14. Never before have we quit but this time it's Do or Die. Please wish us the best

    Hi quillz,

Welcome to the Smokers Help Line Forums. I am saddened to hear of your sister's serious medical condition. This is a very trying time for both of you.

I too quit after being hospitalized largely as a result of smoking. After several months smoke free I am feeling in peak form, better than I have felt in many years. I used nicotine lozenges and gum to get here.

Wishing you both all the very best in your quit journey!

    Eagerquit

    Hi quillz,

I am so sorry to hear about your sister.  What a trying time for both of you.

It is great that you are quitting too as a means of supporting her.  Congratulations on your 11 days smoke free.  Both of you can do it, you really can.  I smoked for over 43 years and I quit cold turkey 17 months ago with the help of this site.  Was it hard?  Heck yes.  But I just grit my teeth and kept going.

The two of you have a very important goal to work towards.  You have to quit in order for your sister to get her surgery.  So hang tough, and believe in yourselves.  And don't be afraid to use NRTs.  They are there to help, and I am sure you can use all the help you can get.

And please keep posting so we can all help to support you through this difficult time.  Both my parents, and many of my siblings, have had cancer, so I know what it's like.  My heart goes out to you both.
