All I have thought about was having a smoke on my first day quitting. I'm taking Champix, so I am not going crazy not having a cigarette but I swear it comes to mind like every 5 minutes and it driving me crazy. Also, I just feel moody and miserable. Please tell me it gets better!

Good morning ascampbell, congratulations on deciding to stop smoking.
Find things to keep your mind busy so you can redirect your thoughts to what you are doing. You can colour, knit, play games on your phone or even call someone.
The moodiness could be from the Champix. I know that can be a side effect. Talking to someone can also help with the moodiness. I am on day 8 and haven't been that moody. At least not yet, lol. I can get snappy with my 16 year old but that can be normal.
The smokers helpline and all of us here will support you through this rough time.
Keep it up, you will feel better soon!

    Hi ascampbell,

Congratulations on your decision to quit smoking. What you are feeling is normal enough and yes, it definitely gets better. I was obsessed with cigarettes when I used to smoke and that did not change in the early quit process. Eventually I lost interest as other activities predominated and all the former triggers fell into the past. The following 4D's help me and many others:

Delay. The urge will pass whether you smoke or not.
    Deep breathe.
    Drink water.
Do something to take your mind off smoking.

Wishing you every success in your quit.

    Good morning ascampbell,

Congratulations on making it through day one. Some of the things I do to distract myself are walking, reading, knitting and colouring. If you go to the distraction section you will find a lot of ideas to distract yourself and I'm sure other members will help as well.

Here's to another smoke free day!

    Hi ascampbell!

Congratulations on surviving day one! Keeping busy can be tough but remember this is temporary. As is the irritability. It is pretty common to have some hard feelings and thoughts when quitting. Champix like Susan said might contribute to it as well. If the irritability becomes overwhelming, it might be a good idea to reach out to your doctor. Most often it is temporary and subsides as the quit continues.

Remember to take in nice deep breaths!

Looking forward to hearing about day 3,
    One day at a time,
    Lillian

I am on day 3 and yesterday was good. This morning since I’m off work I really wanted a coffee and a smoke on my back yard patio. But I refrained, still had my coffee and started laundry instead (not as fun) lol.

    Hi ascampbell,

Congratulations on your 3 days smoke free!

When we quit smoking, we often have to change our routines.  So for example, we learn how to have a coffee without a cigarette.  I know it's difficult, but it's not impossible.  Mind over matter!

You can do this, ascampbell.  Believe in yourself, and take it one step at a time.  Drink lots of water, distract yourself, keep busy, and think about all of the reasons why you want to quit.  You deserve to live a smoke free life.

    Hi ascampbell,

So glad to hear that most of the irritability has subsided. Congratulations on making it to day 5! What an accomplishment.

brieffree and treepo, you're both so helpful. Preparing ahead of time by changing your routines and using the 4D's such as distractions and water are proven ways to stay quit.

Good for you ascampbell for doing these strategies and following through.

    Best,

    Jenna Lee
